Android Trojan horse highlights risk the opening of the markets - Wired News

Android users travelling outside the official Android Market must be careful which apps they install. (Of a HTC Droid Eris) photo by Jon Snyder/Wired.com

Android fans have long defended philosophy "open" Google smartphone platform. The recent emergence of a new Trojan horse in unofficial places Android app, however, may cause users to think twice about how open they want the platform to be.

The application in question, Android.Walkinwat, appears to be a pirated, free another version application, "walking and text." The true version is available at the official purchase of market Google Android for a low price ($1.54).

If you download the wrong app (from informal markets for Android apps) and install it, it redirects you to the actual application in the Android market - but in the background, it sends the following message embarrassing for your complete directory via SMS:

Hey, just downloaded an app hacked off the coast of the internet, [sic] walk and text for Android. IM stupid and good market, it is encrypted only 1 buck.Do not steal like me!

Blatant spelling and grammatical errors aside, the text message serves as a reminder of the risks for those willing to go outside the official market for applications.

"Someone downloaded the app, inserted their malware and it downloaded in other non-official markets," Chief product Symantec mobile team John Engels said article in an interview.

In other words, if you go outside the official market, things may not be what they seem, and there is no guarantee that what you download, this is what you really want to.

Google maintains clear policies on all applications that are downloaded on the official Android market, and developers quite well know in advance what are these policies and how not to break. Whenever an application in clear violation of the policies of Google presents on the market - as, say, a piece of malicious software - engineers Google's Android are often quick to quash it.

But if you're not one for the regulations and rules, wicked and want to see what the markets not sanctioned by Google have to offer, simply access them on a device Android is for you to check a box on the settings page, allowing your phone install applications from "unknown sources".

To some extent, this is not a huge problem for the novice user. Many external applications are hosted on web sites that users like your grandmother probably are not going to file sharing. And unless they have tried to install these external applications by musical them, they have probably never disabled permissions from sources unknown box first.

But the beginning of the last week of new App Store Amazon may have changed. To install App Store Amazon on an Android device, you must first clear this permissions check box. While there may be no immediate risk with downloading apps from App Store the Amazon, he opens the door for users to enable the other informal - and therefore more risky - apps must be installed on their devices, from other sources.

"As soon as you flip the switch and go from the Android Market, which is the place where most people go, and then you put yourself at some risk,"a security researcher Charlie Miller told Wired in a previous interview."."

"The threat will persist as long as people continue to download software pirated networks peer-to-peer," analysts research threat Webroot Armando Orozco and Andrew Brandt said article. They say that sticking to the Android Market is your safest bet, but if you're still forced to go outside the box official for your applications, whether it's Amazon the App Store or another informal market, you should "carefully examine the permissions of the demandeset app does not install it if it is to have access to certain functions (like the)" (possibility to send SMS messages) that the application should not need access to the. »

But is not staying within the defeat of the Android Market the purpose of choosing a platform with a philosophy of "open"? If you want a more strict system, closed with stringent regulations on its applications through a review process, you can both buy an iPhone.

"Android users enabling music is not necessarily to piracy or the installation of applications from unsafe sources," says Alicia diVittorio, Lookout Mobile Security spokesman. "In fact, it's great to have another source for consumers download applications of a trade mark recognized as Amazon." Indeed, Amazon Appstore is not much different from Apple App Store: the two companies require an intense process of review and approval prior to any submitted developer of applications available to purchase.

Essentially, there is an inherent risk that comes with download apps for a device with an attitude of openness as the Android. Even the official market is susceptible to infiltration by malicious software, as evidenced in the corridor of malicious applications from the store this month. But, in an area relatively free and open, as the Android, the risk remains the admission price.

The protection of personal information group minimizes the grab Google Buzz - register

Equipment for the defence of the interests of the U.S. web downplayed reports that suggest that it is $1 domains. 75 m on a class action settlement between the protection of privacy and Google groups, suite spring gaff in Mountain View with Buzz social network.

The Executive Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, Marc Rotenberg, told The Register that "money is not the main point" in the opposition brought before a district court of California earlier this week.

"Google lawyers did not want funds to organizations which were actually standing in society on the issue of Buzz," he told us, "and which is the main point here."

Groups that have benefited from funds included the American Civil Liberties Union, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Brookings Institution.

Outside of the deposit, seen by El Reg, EPIC did not a public statement more on its beef on the settlement of continuation of the class action with Google.

On Wednesday, March 30, he praised a separate settlement between the Federal Trade Commission and Google on Buzz, who stated that the web hub would be subject to verification of the biennial of privacy for the next 20 years.

EPIC, who led the initial Buzz of the FTC complaint, described this gesture as "far-reaching", though he was filing his objections against the regulations of the class action suit in court.

"It is the most important decision of privacy by the Commission to date." "For users of the internet, it should lead to higher standards of privacy and better protection of the personal data," said EPIC.

Reuters, stressed today that EPIC had requested $1. 75 m from the colony, after the group represented eight organizations for the protection of personal information online in its court filing earlier this week.

"There is very little national organizations truly focused on privacy online and even less that play an important role in the measures of protection of public policy and consumers to protect the privacy of commercial rights - non-governmental - interest""the filing reads."

"While the two industrient-financing and non-industry-funded groups are potentially worthy candidates for funding for many reasons, we believe it is imperative for the purposes of the establishment and the benefit of the class that organizations generally do not receive substantial industry funding allocated most of the funding in this case."

Last November, Google contacted all Gmail users via an email in which he confirmed he had reached a settlement in a trial in his privacy - lite Buzz social network has been bolted to everyone by default mailbox in early 2010.

"Shortly after its launch, we have heard a number of people who were concerned about the protection of personal information." In addition, we were sued by a group of users of Buzz and recently reached a settlement in this case, "Google wrote at the time."

He added that little money of $8. 5 m Fund would be used to distribute grants to groups for the protection of personal information of the internet. In addition, Google confirmed that money should be used to pay the lawyers and people who sued the company.

Google has raised the Buzz in February 2010. Launched, it automatically exposes most frequent Gmail contacts of users for the public interwebs. Users were given the option to hide the list from the view of the public, but many complained that cut the social network is tricky as a check box to do so is not displayed in their mailbox.

Days later, Google moved the location of the check box in an effort to reduce to silence complaints. It has also changed how treated Buzz contacts of the user. But these tweaks came too late for some, who responded in contentious fashion. ®

HP Taps Google print in the sky server - register

HP has announced that its ePrint printers are the first to support Google cloud Print, a service that allows to print via the interwebs.

"With HP ePrint and cloud-aware printers, you get the best print experience via Google cloud Print," sang Stephen Nigro Chief of HP Imaging and printing group in a statement, canned.

Google Director of product management Mike Jazayeri also took a moment for crow, and clarify ePrint that HP printers - available in incarnations OfficeJet, PhotoSmart, envy and LaserJet - are not the only instruments to benefit from cloud service business. "While the cloud printing is possible with any printer that is connected to a PC,"he said, "users can achieve a more simple, intuitive experience by printing directly on a cloud-ready printer." ""

In other words, if your printer can talk cloud print APIs of Google - as do the HP ePrint devices - you can print directly to them by sending your print job to the servers of Google, which checks if your cloud Print-enabled printer is registered with the service. If so, the task of printing goes offshore and your printer spitting it.

If your printer does not Print-enabled clouds, it must be connected to a PC connected to the intertubes.

In a blog Thursday, Abhijit Kalamkar Google software engineer ticket boasted that "you can already use Google cloud print on notebooks of chromium" releases mobile Gmail and Google Docs, a third-party Android applicationa Chrome extension, j and Firefox Add-on.

Mention of the "cahiers chome" Kalamkar, of course, refers to a rather limited of the property, a model - set and one, the Cr-48 Google is still a baby beta, available only for developers just one select, shapers of opinion and other souls to chance.

Cloud of Google Print was revealed in April, as a service to support based on a browser Chrome OS the mountain view, which was intended to appear at the end of 2010. At the time of his announcement, print clouds also said to be able to print from other devices, while Chrome OS was his main reason for "being."

When Chrome OS dragged its expiry date - Google says now that he appear you in "mid-2011" in Acer and Samsung devices - cloud print took a life of its own, launched in December 2010.

But it was expected Thursday that all parties have gathered: cloud Print, clouds Print-ready apps such as Gmail and Google Docs mobile versions and now Cloud Print-ready HP printers. ®

IE, Safari, iPhone, BlackBerry to Microsoft fall; Chrome, Firefox, Android... - Washington Post (blog)

Microsoft - a computer-security annual competition in which researchers will compete to win cash prizes and hardware by exploiting browsers Web - end of last week, and the results may surprise you.

The first browser to obtain the machete was Apple's Safari. As Peter Bright of Ars Technica wrote Thursday, almost current 5.0.3. version of Safari, if running on a Mac OS X updated copy 10.6.6, succumbed to a malicious page written by French researchers with VUPEN, a security firm, in a few seconds.

They have proven the attack distance launches Mac Calculator program and writes a file to flash the MacBook Air drive - earn the right to keep the laptop, according to the rules of the competition.

Internet Explorer 8 Microsoft, running on Windows 7, updated with Service Pack 1, fell later in the day. Bright report note that the IE 8 exploits hack more at issue and that was five to six weeks to build, against two for Safari feat.

The second day of Microsoft (organized by the subsidiary based in Austin TippingPoint DVLabs have HP and held each year, at the CanSecWest Conference in Vancouver), the iPhone 4, and a flame BlackBerry smartphone also suffered successful hacks. Although the iPhone 4 did not iOS of just-released to Apple 4.3 - the rules of the competition only requires that the target device before being current as of the week before software execution - vulnerability exploited in the attack are 4.3, too.

In two days, nobody has even tried to challenge Google's Chrome (even if Google has offered a separate scholarship to anyone who could hack chromium), Mozilla Firefox, OS of a s link smartphone running Google Android 2.3 or a Pro of the place of Dell with Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

(Google shipped the first patch for a bug to Microsoft, Gregg Keizer of Computerworld writes this morning.)

There is not much interpretation needed for these results, right? Apple Mac OS X is a platform dangerously insecure - it has been successfully hacked Microsoft every year since its debut in 2007 - which should be avoided if you do not want your computer to get supported by a drive - by download.

Except... This is not the actual experience of the use of a Mac. Or an iPhone. Both Apple computer and phone operating systems remain almost completely free of viruses, worms and Trojan horses, even while Apple market share has increased dramatically in both markets.

For example, Apple now claims 20% of the U.S. market of consumers, a number which would have been incredibly high only 10 years ago. IOS of the iPhone is 27 percent of the U.S. smartphone, linked with phones BlackBerry from Research In Motion and just behind Google Android, according to the latest research from Nielsen.

Should even 20 percent of the market enough to attract the interest of the authors of malicious software? I asked on Twitter and a blogger for ZDNet Ed Bott veteran Windows interesting response. He replied that "malware writers play a numbers game overall." OS x a ~ 6% in the world. »

But if current trends continue, it would not long before that the Mac hits 10 percent of the total market. Who will be sufficient? Or malware will continue to be a market in which Mac users marginalized at a considerably lower selection of third-party software from running on Windows?

Latest Apple security moves suggests he has an idea where things are lead: for the first time in recent history, it shares advance copies of its operating system Mac OS X Lion to come with security researchers. What is your forecast for Mac malware? Let me know in the comments.

Congress will push Google to modify its algorithm to punish pirates Sites? -paidContent.org

Judging by the hearings today, some members of Congress are prepared to consider radical measures to rid the internet of "rogue" websites accused of piracy. Among them: getting the search engines such as Google (NSDQ: GOOG) change their research results and order ISPs to block certain websites from purely and simply U.S. viewers. Until several months ago, Congress has never even discussed taking steps like these. The fact that they are now on the table is probably a function of several factors, including an aggressive campaign by the entertainment industry and a proliferation of illegal content online.

Congress has begun to consider the idea of allowing the application of the Federal Act to block Web sites in September, when Senator Patrick Leahy introduced the controversial Bill COICA in the last Congress. The House of representatives is now considering a similar proposal, although, no Bill has been introduced.

See more of our most recent coverage of copyright
or add an alert for future coverage of copyright law.

This debate is taking place in a context in which the Government has already begun get more aggressive with piracy. Since the middle of last year, immigration and customs officials have seized more than 100 domain names Web sites they claim were contempt of the laws of copyright and trademarks.

Highlights from the hearing included:

Spokesperson of Hollywood describes a "shadow economy" illicit content Frederick Huntsberry, chief operating officer of Paramount Pictures, describes how just four or five clicks of a simple search Google, consumers are likely to come into contact with websites the contents of stream of Paramount and others without permission. Huntsberry said that the big problem is the thriving "cyberlocker" sites that encourage users to download movies and other content by offering rewards. Huntsberry believes that only a site MegaUpload, wins the annual profit between $ 40 million and $ 300 million.

Congress must pass legislation to "level the playing field" between the pirate sites and legitimate suppliers, said Huntsberry.  "We have reached the limits of mutual assistance", he said, noting that Paramount has sent more than 40 million "notice of infringement" last year, but he is not the tooth of piracy much. (It is not clear exactly what Huntsberry meant by a "notice of infringement", given that later in the hearing, it was said that Paramount sent 1.5 million records for removal copyright.) Piracy is stealing us jobs and tax revenue, he added.

Sympathy for the cause but the frustration at the lack of details. At least a member of the Congress was clearly favourable to global cause of the Huntsberry but frustrated by the lack of details in the proposal. Huntsberry and other witnesses should have put a specific proposal to the table to tell Congress what he must do, said REP. John Conyers (D-Michigan). "I am disappointed in all of the witnesses," said Conyers.

"We have the possibility for the law enforcement officers to go after the rogue Web sites," said Huntsberry. "It is now impossible to even find who are the owners of these sites, or where they are served."

Another witness, analyst Daniel Castro of Information technology & Innovation Foundation, Donna Conyers some of the details he was seeking: Congress should simply create a black list of sites, then ISP block and tell search engines to remove lists of results of research of the force. "The Federal Government should work with industry to create a master list of all these sites," said Castro. "You could require providers of services and financial networks to stop doing business with these sites".

Ready to tweak search results? In his presentation, Huntsberry showed how simple research search terms normal - like "stream" or "watch movies online" - always made many websites considers "rogue" sites entertainment industry. Which clearly had an impact on the control panel and a few different members, including the REP. Tom Reed (R - n .INCLUDING.) and representative of Sandy Adams (R - FL), asked about the possibility of giving research priorities to the media "authorized" options like Netflix (NSDQ: NFLX). For example, by typing a search for "movies stream" in Google makes the link at the top of the page a site called solar films, who hacked Huntsberry as a site full of links to the content, including just-released films such as adjustment of Paramount Office.

Most of the Panel appeared in support of the idea of cracking down on Web sites 'pariahs', but some were critical. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D - San Jose) new emerged as one of the few opponents of Congress to a simplified system for websites accused of piracy. Earlier this month, entered Government Lofgren criticizedthe of Web sites. Today, Lofgren said fear that a right of withdrawal of Web site leaves room for fair use or other legitimate uses of the author. And she also implied that she is concerned about legislators directing search engines and Internet service providers. "If we enter the design of the technology by the Government of the United States, which, too, will move to the offshore," she said.

Rep. Mel Watt (D - n BW) had some concerns about what kind of due process should be involved with deletion of a Web site. Huntsberry and Castro, said that it was not important to let the accused address a judge prior to their Web sites have taken; to return a day or two after the seizure took place is sufficient, they said. Watts was clearly uncomfortable with this proposal. "If you look at the physical assets, they are seized without review by the Court," stressed the Castro. "I was not too hot on this process, not more," said Watts. Even if the goods are illegal, the accused must have the opportunity to present their case before their property is taken, said Watts.

Interim Regitrar of Copyright Maria Pallante stated that the closure of a site Web "infringement" would not violate the first amendment. But "even the worst of the worse should receive notices", she said, and relief to the owners of copyright must be "closely tailored." Pallante has not taken a position on the question of whether the Government should tweak the search results, simply stating that it is "a more difficult question."

Sprint, Kyocera Set Date double-screen Echo release - eWeek

Sprint and Kyocera provide the Kyocera Echo double-screen smartphone available on 17 April, at a price of $199 with a two year contract. In a submission to the battery in the interest of consumers before the release, Sprint also takes bookings for the device online, from March 26.

On 7 February, Sprint held a prestige event in New York City to debut the ECHO, an Android smartphone with two 3.5 inch WVGA-screen touch connected by a hinge. According to the hinge?s angle, these screens perform several tasks: drag-on the other, and the echo looks and feels like a smartphone single screen a little thicker. Screens can also be dragged flat and side by side?to create a 4.7-inch display screen movies, or other media?or inclined far from each other at an angle, multitasking or type with a virtual keyboard.

The two screens can run two applications ?simultaneously and independently, ?, CEO of Sprint Dan Hesse told the audience in the event of the city of New York. For users of the company, the smartphone supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, in addition to POP and IMAP e-mail accounts.

In the heart Echo?s is an Android 2.2 operating system powered by a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. In conversation with eWEEK on February 8, executives from Sprint and Kyocera seemed to be separating the echo of other size devices more walk the line between tablets and smartphones, such as the 5-inch Dell Streak.

The mode of ?tablet of Echo?s emulates some features of a tablet, but not a tablet, ?, it?s said David Owens, Sprint?s vice President of the acquisition of consumers. ?It?s a phone first. ?

These frameworks have shown the wide echo across applications, films and e-mail. Unlike good number of smartphones and tablets on the market, face front and rear cameras Echo doesn?t characteristic for the videoconference, keeping to a 5-megapixel rear camera.

Balancing the benefits of the dual screens, is, however, claims of Echo?s on the life of the battery, something that Kyocera hopes to resolve by the device with two batteries and a charger to juice simultaneously phone and a second battery of shipment.

Sprint and Kyocera want course that Echo?s unique form factor can be distinguished in an increasingly crowded market. Even when space and the battles of iPhone Apple?s for the common market against a growing number of Google's Android, and Research In Motion devices continues to grow on the Consumer Affairs with its line of BlackBerry, Microsoft makes a renewed smartphone play with Windows Phone 7.

Review: Gmail browser - all about Symbian Apps

Published by David Gilson at 10: 08 UTC, March 15, 2011

The good thing about Google services, it is that you can get their fair anywhere these days. Pixelpipe people have now created an application that uses "native WebKit capabilities that are available with Qt". This application provides Gmail, tasks, calendar of Google and Buzz all in a single application. Using technology Qt is a breakthrough of Widgets RunTime Web made by Asri Al Baker pioneer. Keep reading to see how well Pixelpipe captured the experience of Google on Symbian devices.

Gmail Apps browser has a very simple user interface. A progress bar along the bottom of the screen doubles as a placeholder for five buttons. From left to right, are: Back, forward, zoom in, Zoom out, and a shortcut to the list of applications.

The rest of the screen is resumed with the content and control what Google application that you use. For a brief interlude, I will return to CEO of Pixelpipe, Brett Butterfield:

Pixelpipe: Google Apps developer Pixelpipe browser on Vimeo.

Gmail

The Gmail interface is quite similar to the iPhone/Android enhanced web interface that we have seen before. However, there are some important differences. Anyone who has used Gmail improved mobile site in Web will be aware of the stakes of the screen width. These problems were corrected, allowing Gmail to adapt perfectly to the width of landscape of 640 pixels for the Symbian touch screen format.

In the improved Gmail interface in the Web navigation, Symbian users have also missed next to the floating menu, which provides access to functions as archive and delete. However, cross-platform users will be pleased to hear that it is present in a solution on measurement of the Pixelpipe. What makes the site much more usable Gmail, despite limited screen resolution of Symbian.

The calendar interface is the same as the web mobile available to Symbian browser interface. Month view indicates only events throughout the day. Therefore, the user has to use hyperlinks left and rights, or select days, see the timed entries.

Creating the event and the Edition is supported in a more user-friendly manner. A calendar handy floating is presented in the selection of a date, so you don't type in dates.
The look and feel of the site Google Calendar may actually be preferable to some people that the Symbian calendar application integrated. However, as with one of these applications, the user experience depends completely on the connectivity and latency.

The Task Manager is a long requested feature of Gmail, but is still very limited in its functionality. However, for the simple list management task it will probably suffice, particularly since it supports multiple lists and subtasks.

Tasks are properly supported in Gmail Apps browser. The user can view all their task lists and tasks stored in each. Users can create, modify and delete tasks; mark them as complete. and delete completed tasks. What does not appear to be possible creates a subtask. Add a due date for a task, a calendar handy is high, as mentioned above, to allow easy entry of dates.

Buzz is unfortunate Google social network; an attempt to create a more rich, threaded Twitter version. Among other reasons, privacy means that Buzz never really gained traction, with only the hardcore geeks paste with the service, just in case it has finally hit a critical mass.

Implementation of Buzz in Qt of Pixelpipe application is fundamental and not immediately complete. The main menu of the Buzz allows you to view the updates of people who you are following, who are close to you, your messages, which you follow, following you, and a link to find other people.
These all work with varying degrees of success. The lists of disciples, for example, does not screen, but instead is packaged with scroll bars that do not work. Also, find updates Buzz of people nearby still works because the application cannot access the phone location.

To be fair, those who are least used aspects of Buzz. In terms of reading messages, it performs well. You can make posts and control if they are public or private sector. However there is no field entry for hyperlinks.

In its beta tester mailing list, Pixelpipe has stated that this request came from an internal training project. The criticisms that I am here are therefore me being rather temperamental for what is, after all, a free to try side-project. However, it is a compelling idea and is a reminder in a timely manner to how the mobile web has the potential to native as applications and when networks become faster. I look forward to see the development of this project.

Something which although Pixelpipe do is a rapid development, keep an eye on this project. There are more the Qt based applications on the road to Pixelpipe too, hopefully including a Google Reader application. Player was in early beta versions of the browser Apps from Gmail, but did not at the release candidate due to feedback from users.

Microsoft Explorer faster for Web Applications - Bloomberg News

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) has published a faster version of its Internet Explorer browser that adds privacy controls and video features, a bid to regain the market share of the lost for Firefox and Google Inc. (GOOG) Chrome.

Internet Explorer 9 relies on HTML5, the latest version of the language that presents Web content, that allows to manage multimedia content more sites. The browser designed to run applications in the browser faster, while adding privacy options more powerful than the offer from Google. Today, it is available for download, said the company based in Redmond, Washington.

Microsoft seeks to accommodate the growing number of application software that runs online rather than on the Windows operating system. The anemic performance of last browser Microsoft make it more difficult to use the Internet apps and customers pushed to rival products, said David Smith, a Stamford-based analyst, Gartner Inc. Connecticut.

"The vast overwhelming majority of new apps which develop today is developed to run in browsers - they are not native applications for Windows," said Smith. "Every seller must have a very competitive offer it.".

Although Internet Explorer remains the leading browser, its dominance has fluctuated over the past two years. Need share of 57% in February, down 62% a year earlier, according to Net Applications, which tracks Internet usage statistics. Mozilla's Firefox had 22 per cent and Chrome from Google 11 percent. Safari of Apple Inc. (AAPL) of ranked fourth, with 6.4%.

Microsoft reaches $1 cent 25.69 yesterday on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Shares fell 8 percent this year.

By supporting HTML5 for video game technology, the browser is a fee kick - to Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE) Flash most popular software to watch the clips on the Internet. Apple has limited the use of Flash on the iPhone and iPad, endorsing HTML5 instead, after the Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs said Flash was too slow to run on mobile devices.

The privacy news, during this time, pressure on Google to answer, Smith said. Microsoft has added the ability for users to create "Excluded" - style lists only bar list Web sites tracking users do on the Web.

The Federal Trade Commission of the United States called for non-track options in browsers, said Smith. Firefox has also developed such a feature.
